Bangladesh Bank Governor Ahsan H Mansur has said that AFM Shahinul Islam, head of the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU), has been placed on leave after a video of him circulated on social media. The governor said an investigation has been launched, and further action would depend on its findings. The move came a day after a Facebook video showed Shahinul in a private video call with a woman. Shahinul was absent from his Bangladesh Bank office on Tuesday, and he could not be reached for comment despite repeated calls. A former executive director of Bangladesh Bank, Shahinul was appointed chief of the BFIU in January by the finance ministry for a two-year term.
