BFAR sets 3-month fishing ban in southern Mindanao

ADVERTISEMENTCommercial fishing of pelagic fish like hard-tailed mackerel, round scad and purse-eyed scad has been stopped at the start of the month. Pelagic fish live in depths that are not close to the bottom nor near the shore. There has been a decrease in the harvest of pelagic fish and other species at the gulf, Idris said, citing a study. Elsie May Solidum, DOST assistant director for southern Mindanao, blamed overfishing, dynamite fishing and massive pollution in the gulf for the dwindling catch. This had prompted BFAR and the Department of Agriculture to suspend commercial fishing at the gulf for three months.
