BCL suspends CU unit activities over infighting

Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) has suspended the activities of its Chittagong University unit over the continuing feud among the supporters of the unit’s president and general secretary. The decision was made after the followers of Chhatra League CU unit President Alamgir Tipu and General Secretary Fazle Rabbi Sujan engaged in a series of chases and counter-chases on the university campus on Thursday, said Chhatra League Central Office Secretary Delwar Hossain Shahzada. Police raided some student dormitories later in the night, but there was no initial reports of detention or weapon recovery as of 11:30pm. A number of CU Chhatra League leaders and activists have been suspended in recent months, especially since early this year, over factional conflicts owing to establishing supremacy on the campus. In one of the latest incidents, the ruling Awami League’s student front on April 20 expelled the CU unit Deputy Office Secretary Mizanur Rahman Bipul and Assistant Secretary Abdullah Kawser Shakil after they clashed with police.
