Award-winning Canadian writer Richard B. Wright has died at the age of 79


Canadian novelist Richard B. Wright has died at the age of 79, his agent confirmed Wednesday. The St. Catharines, Ont.-based author won the Scotiabank Giller Prize, Governor General’s Literary Award for Fiction and 2002 Trillium Book Award for his most popular novel, 2001’s Clara Callan. He wrote over 15 books throughout his career, including In the Middle of Life, The Age Of Longing, and the recent Nightfall, which writer Gillian Turnbull praised for its “complex and experienced” characters and “lovely and emotionally charged story.”RelatedWright also published a memoir, A Life with Words, in 2015, detailing his experience growing up in a working class family in Midland, Ont., during the Second World War, and his struggle to become a writer. In 2006, Wright, who taught English at Ridley College in St. Catharines until his retirement, received an Honorary Doctor of Letters from Trent University, and in 2007, he became a member of the Order of Canada.
