'Avatar' Might Save Disney From A Slump After Avengers' And 'Star Wars'

The core narrative of next year is going to be whether Walt Disney can maintain its market share dominance without such surefire monsters as Toy Story 4, Avengers: Endgame, Star Wars IX and Frozen II. The second burning question is whether the next batch of “new” MCU movies will be as robustly well-received as the last half-dozen or so. What becomes of Disney’s theatrical might if Star Wars takes a real sabbatical and the post-Endgame MCU is merely doing very well as opposed to ridiculously well? I’d be surprised if we don’t have an announcement teaser attached to either Frozen II or Star Wars IX as a kind of passing-of-the-torch moment. A successful Avatar franchise would singlehandedly replace Star Wars on the Disney balance sheets and make up for potential underperformances elsewhere.
