Avalanche closes Trans-Canada Highway near B.C.-Alberta border

An emergency official says no one was hurt when an avalanche rolled over the Trans-Canada Highway in southeastern British Columbia early Wednesday morning. Jamieson Harbottle, the fire chief in nearby Field, B.C., said one tractor-trailer was involved in the slide, but only because the driver had tried to get past the avalanche. The avalanche closed down the highway just inside the British Columbia boundary in Yoho National Park, west of Lake Louise, Alta. Transportation Ministry advisory said both directions of the highway were closed off from Field to the boundary with Alberta. Harbottle said more avalanche control will need to be completed along the highway before the route can reopen.
