Auto CEOs Should Skip Meeting With Trump And Talk To California Instead

Top executives from the largest automakers are scheduled to meet Friday with President Trump in the White House. Mary Barra of GM, Jim Hackett of Ford and Toyota’s Jim Lentz have surely made their views on NAFTA known to the White House before now. The target was later reduced to between 50 and 52.6 mpg, which equates to roughly 40 mpg in real-world driving. Last week California and 16 other states, most of which follow California’s emission standards, sued the EPA in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia to prevent it from revising the federal fuel economy standards. Even if the Trump administration succeeds in weakening the federal ones, automakers will likely have to meet the higher bar set by California.
