Authorities fear Canada fire will double its size

Fort McMurray itself is now a ghost city where only 200 firefighters remain to protect its essential infrastructures. Canadian authorities believe the size of the forest fire, which has forced 90,000 people to evacuate from the northwestern part of the country, will quickly double its size to burn some 200,000 hectares (490,000 acres) sometime this Saturday. On Tuesday, authorities were forced to order the total evacuation of Fort McMurray's approximately 70,000 inhabitants when the blaze reached the city's suburbs. The minister added that the Mounted Police believe that current conditions will permit the evacuation of another 7,500 people south of Fort McMurray. Goodale said that on Friday some 7,500 people were able to drive through Fort McMurray in convoys of cars escorted by the Canadian Mounted Police.
