AT THE Popular-The Star Readers’ Choice Awards (RCA), Datuk M. Shanmughalingam’s debut collection of short stories, Marriage And Mutton Curry, won third prize in the fiction category. Published by Singapore’s Epigram Books, nine of the stories were published previously, while the remaining six are new. “There is much greater freedom to be creative when writing fiction – and I value creativity greatly,” said Shanmughalingam. But his love for writing, and related milestones in this creative pursuit can be traced back many decades – his first published short story, “Birthday”, won second place in the Oxford University Short Story Prize.
