The president of the upper house of the Victorian parliament Shaun Leane asked four Greens MPs to take off the keffiyeh at the start of the sitting day as Greens leader Ellen Sandell sought a ruling on the wearing of the scarf in the lower house. Both Leane and the lower house speaker, Maree Edwards, ruled on Wednesday that the scarf was political, meaning it could not be worn in either chamber. The ruling makes Victoria’s parliament one of the few in the world where MPs are banned from wearing the keffiyeh, the scarf that has been linked to the struggle for a Palestinian state for decades
