Australia’s Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) has confirmed voluntary CO2 emissions targets for cars, utes and SUVs for 2030. If met, the so-called “stretch targets” will reduce CO2 emissions by an average of four per cent per annum between 2020 and 2030. According to FCAI estimates, new cars and SUVs sold in Australia would average less than 100g/km of CO2 emissions by 2030 if the targets are met. Is the best way a CO2 standard or a feebate/incentive scheme? The Clean Car Standard and Clean Car Discount, both proposed last year, could prevent more than 6 million tonnes of dangerous climate pollution going into our atmosphere over 25 years, Jenkins said.
