Australia bush fires: The town defying blazes for three weeks

The town of Yanderra in Sydney's south-west has lived with the Green Wattle Creek fire at its doorstep for almost three weeks. But on Saturday, the pair "didn't want to run; we've been running for the last three weeks". By 5.15pm, there'd been a southerly wind change, which pushed the fire front away from the town and towards Bargo. At 6.30pm, the Buxton fire station was abuzz with lights from fire trucks and police cars as the fire again raced towards the town. Against the smoky sky on Saturday afternoon, the flag at Buxton Rural Fire Station continued to fly at half-mast.
