CAPE TOWN, South Africa — Australia cricketers confessed to ball tampering in a desperate plot hatched by captain Steve Smith and senior players as they saw the third test against South Africa slipping away on Saturday. “The leadership group knew about it,” Smith said, admitting he and senior players who he would not name planned the cheating during the lunch break. Bancroft was charged with ball tampering by the match officials. It also wasn’t revealed if Smith and other players were facing charges of bringing the game into disrepute. There was movement of players, including Smith, on and off the field in the immediate aftermath of Bancroft’s actions being caught on cameras.
