Auston Matthews took a good first step Wednesday toward returning to the Maple Leafs lineup. The Leafs’ top player practised with his teammates for the first time since suffering a separated shoulder Feb. 22. Matthews donned a red non-contact jersey and was on the ice for 30 minutes, about half the full practice. The Leafs have a four-day layoff between games, creating speculation Matthews might have time to rejoin the roster as soon as Saturday’s home game against Pittsburgh. “I noticed he was wearing red today … we don’t have a whole lot of red in our uniforms.”
