Auston Matthews will make his debut in a Maple Leafs sweater on Sunday night when Toronto plays host to a roster resembling the Montreal Canadiens in a pre-season game at the Air Canada Centre. “First real game with the Leafs, it’s going to be pretty special to put on the jersey and get out there,” Matthews said following the morning skate. Any time you play Montreal, it’s kind of a big game.”Of course, Matthews can only assume as much at this point, having never done it before. As the rest of the pre-season moves along, Babcock realizes the competition for Matthews and the other youngsters will increase. “He has had the puck lots, which is real positive, so he just has to keep going,” Babcock said.
