Auditor slams government security vetting

Key measures include such things as employment screening, security vetting for access to classified information and ensuring access to information is cut off when a person leaves a job. A report by the auditor-general on released on Friday found the Australian Government Security Vetting Agency does not "effectively mitigate the government's exposure to insider threats". The vetting agency says it does not provide information about identified security concerns to departments outside Defence due to a concern it could breach privacy laws. However, the auditor says this ignores the fact that in 2014 the vetting agency was given permission, through a change to its protective security policy framework, for this sharing to occur. The auditor also looked at vetting processes in the Attorney-General's Department, Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency, Australian Securities and Investments Commission, Department of Home Affairs and Digital Transformation Agency.
