You can’t have a memorable Midnight Madness at the Toronto International Film Festival without 911 being called — right? Raw, a French-Belgian film that follows a vegetarian’s journey to becoming a cannibal (yes, really), was so graphic midway through, that multiple audience members passed out and an ambulance had to be called, with some possibly even having vomited from sheer terror. First-time director Julia Ducournau’s film premiered at Cannes Film Festival in May and won a critics’ prize, and based on the reaction at TIFF, it earned it.
