More questions than answers remain as little-known rules and legalities leave powerhouse clubs in Auckland rugby limbo. But this year saw west Auckland club Suburbs kicked out of finals contention just one week before they were set to make their run at a second title in three years on account of a rule breach. Fellow west Auckland club Waitemata did that, Suburbs did not. Fans and club officials have been crying foul on the part of the Auckland Rugby Union for the late notice, more than anything else. An Auckland Rugby Union spokesperson said the decisions made at club level (as it pertained to the top and bottom eight make-up) were done by the sub-committees.
