Attack of the killer potatoes: French fries and other fried spuds associated with a doubled risk of death

In what will be a surprise to nearly no one, a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition has found an association between eating (a lot of) fried potatoes and a more than doubled chance of premature death. In an eight-year longitudinal cohort study of North Americans aged 45-79, the largely European researchers found that eating fried potatoes two-to-three times a week was linked to elevated mortality. French fries, curly fries, hash browns, pan-fried potatoes, waffle fries… even poutine fit the criteria of the offending potato dishes. Baked, barbecued, boiled or mashed potatoes weren’t linked to the same risks as fried. Subjects who ate the most potatoes in general didn’t show a higher risk of death.
