As Justin Trudeau headed down the path to Rideau Hall on Sunday morning and launched Canada’s 44th election, the country was in a precarious spot. Ontario was reporting 511 new cases of COVID-19 but no deaths — signs of a worrying but not yet confining fourth wave. If we must go into an election at a time of public health risk, let’s make sure the campaign is vigorous and worthwhile. We are at an inflection point where we need to decide where we want to go from here. Those questions are serious, and the answers will set us on a track with implications for years to come.
