Asylum seeker set fire to house after being told he couldn't stay in the country

Nurhak Sayak, 27, set his Swansea bedroom on fire despite not knowing if other people were in the house at the time. ‌Dean Pulling, prosecuting, told Swansea Crown Court how on January 4 fire crews were called to an address in Argyle Street, Swansea, following reports of a fire. ‌Talking to his neighbour, Sayak told him he started the fire with a lighter because he wasn't receiving his money from the authorities. He told officers he was an asylum seeker who had just found out his appeal had been rejected and he therefore said he had nothing else left in the UK. ‌Mr Pulling told the court the fire had caused "extreme and substantial" damage to the room and the repair costs were around £15,000.
