Only one other known case exists where astronomers have directly observed planets actively clearing gaps in a circumstellar dust disk. Potential for Further DiscoveriesBesides the confirmed planets, astronomers suspect the presence of a third, yet-undetected gas giant within the outer region of the disk. Variations and concentrations within these disks can gradually accumulate, forming planetary cores that continue to grow by accumulating more material. As these young planets form, they carve out gaps along their orbital paths within the disk.
