Astronomers Detect Second Forming Exoplanet in Distant Star's Dust Disk

Astronomers Detect Second Forming Exoplanet in Distant Star's Dust DiskTue 24th Mar, 2026Researchers have identified a second emerging exoplanet within the protoplanetary dust disk surrounding the young star WISPIT 2, according to recent findings from the European Southern Observatory (ESO). Only one other known case exists where astronomers have directly observed planets actively clearing gaps in a circumstellar dust disk. Potential for Further DiscoveriesBesides the confirmed planets, astronomers suspect the presence of a third, yet-undetected gas giant within the outer region of the disk. Variations and concentrations within these disks can gradually accumulate, forming planetary cores that continue to grow by accumulating more material. As these young planets form, they carve out gaps along their orbital paths within the disk.
