The British Museum in London. Remarks by one of its curators on Twitter prompted accusations of racism Tim Ireland/PAThe British Museum has apologised after one of its curators said it tried to avoid using “too many” Asian names on its exhibition labels because they were confusing. Jane Portal, who works in the institution’s Asia department, said they aimed for the labels to “be understandable by 16-year-olds”. Her comments, via the museum’s Twitter account, prompted accusations of racism. Jennifer Sarha, a cultural historian, said the comments were “normalising the idea that foreign names are confusing and thus not worth learning”.
