Asian equity markets follow US lower

Asian equity markets have fallen overnight following yesterday’s sell-off, in which the Dow Jones shed almost 500 points as fears mounted over global economic growth and Washington received the green light to impose tariffs on European goods worth $7.5 billion (see Market Snap below). The Nikkei closed down 2 per cent this morning at 21,341.74. The FTSE 100, which had its worst day in three years yesterday closing down 237.78 points, or 3.2 per cent, at 7,122.54, was forecast to open 25 points lower when trading began. The London-listed global tobacco giant Imperial Brands has announced that Alison Cooper, chief executive, and the board have agreed that she will step down.
