ASHBY — To celebrate the upcoming 75th anniversary of Victory in Japan Day, known as V-J Day, on Friday, the Ashby Historical Society has announced the Ashby Town Pump, a community newsletter that was published during World War II, is now available online. Started in June 1944, the Ashby Town Pump was an eight-page typewritten monthly community newsletter that was mailed to local residents and overseas service members. There were approximately 100 young men and four young women from Ashby who served in World War II. Decades before the internet, the Ashby Town Pump was painstakingly assembled to keep the small town together as the winds of war scattered her residents across two oceans and four continents. The 15 editions of the Ashby Town Pump, from June 1944 to September 1945, are free to download at www.ashbyhistorical.org.
