In the opening scene, he’s outside the ship, fixing something, while inside his infant daughter babbles to him through a high-tech baby monitor while watching TV. For the most part, High Life explores the lives of its crew against an appealingly lo-tech background. She’s reflective but quirky, as might be imagined of someone raised by a single parent – and no one else. A bit of conversation late in the story illustrates the simplicity of human curiosity about what’s out there.
