As the world sees a black hole for the first time, Claire Denis's High Life couldn't be more topical

In the opening scene, he’s outside the ship, fixing something, while inside his infant daughter babbles to him through a high-tech baby monitor while watching TV. For the most part, High Life explores the lives of its crew against an appealingly lo-tech background. She’s reflective but quirky, as might be imagined of someone raised by a single parent – and no one else. (Would you want to be the first permanent resident of Mars, which doesn’t have a decent hospital within 50-million kilometres?) A bit of conversation late in the story illustrates the simplicity of human curiosity about what’s out there.
