As U.S. swim trials conclude, Americans know they’ll need to be faster at Olympics


Katie Ledecky is one of the best swimmers in the world, but many other times posted at the U.S. Olympic trials wouldn’t hold up in Rio. Whoever the swimmers, whatever their resumes, they will almost certainly have to swim faster — in some cases, much faster — in Rio than they did here. In a sport that is generally getting faster, the winning times in 10 of the events here were slower than at the 2012 trials. Both Bowman and Phelps, who qualified in three individual events yet was unhappy with his times, admitted to being “a little” surprised the swimming wasn’t generally faster at trials. “I think that’s what trials will do,” Phelps said.
