Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy announced new elections will be held in Catalonia Dec. 21, even as thousands marched in Barcelona to support independence. Even Scottish nationalists weren’t willing to overtly recognize the vote. Bloc leader Martine Ouellet was quick to show her support for an independent Catalonia Friday morning. On Friday, after Catalonia defied the constitutional provision once again to hold a secret vote on its independence, Spain swiftly pushed back. Trudeau’s confirmation that Canada recognizes “one united Spain” matches the positions of its major allies, however, including the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany and the European Union itself, which all signalled Friday it wouldn’t recognize an independent Catalonia.
