As Google Vows To Derank Russian News Sites, Russia Threatens Tit For Tat

Google has announced plans to derank Russian news services Russia Today (RT) and Sputnik, saying that the state-owned news services have been spreading misinformation. Speaking at the Halifax International Security Forum, Alphabet chairman Eric Schmidt said he wasn't prepared to ban the sites, but would lower them in the company's rankings. The two sites, which are wholly owned by the Russian government, have been widely accused of attempting to influence politics in the west. The move follows a recent advertising ban of RT and Sputnik by Twitter on similar grounds. And earlier this month, the US Department of Justice ordered RT to register as a foreign agent.
