Invercargill artist Sharne Parkinson was at recognised as highly commended at Te Putanga Toi Arts Access Awards 2021 for her volunteer work with prisoners at Invercargill Prison. Parkinson is standing next to the waka the prisoners carved for the Matariki Festival this year. An Invercargill artist has been highly commended for her work teaching prisoners about Māori culture. In the Te Putanga Toi Arts Access Awards 2021 Parkinson was one of many artists to be highly commended for her work. Parkinson voluntarily went to Invercargill Prison after reading the Hōkai Rangi Strategy and offered her expertise for toi Māori and tikanga.
