The 28-year-old’s contract at St Mary’s runs out at the end of the season and he appears to have no intention of extending it. The Gunners are looking to strengthen their defensive options, having suffered a string of injuries at the back this season and Soares presents an affordable and ready-made option. Soares has picked up 33 caps for Portugal and was part of the squad that won Euro 2016.
