Priyanka Sharma, the Howrah district cell convenor of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), was remanded to 14 days in prison by a local court on May 11. The girls were released the day after, but the incident sparked a nation-wide debate on the misuse of Section 66A. This provision of law was struck down as unconstitutional by the Supreme Court in a landmark decision on March 24, 2015, on a PIL filed by law student Shreya Singhal. On Monday, senior advocate Neeraj Kishan Kaul appeared for Sharma and mentioned the matter before a vacation bench of the Supreme Court. The bench initially wanted the matter to be heard by the Calcutta High Court.
