Human Rights Watch, an international nongovernmental organization, slammed the Duterte administration on Tuesday over the arrest of Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV on what it labeled as “trumped-up charges” of rebellion in connection with the 2007 Manila Peninsula seige. “This started with the demonization and eventual incarceration of another senator, Leila de Lima, based on trumped-up charges,” it said. “Senator Trillanes has proven to be the biggest thorn in the side of President Duterte,” the group said. “Trillanes’ arrest today sends a chilling effect among other critics of the Duterte administration,” it added. 572 revoking the amnesty given to Trillanes in 2010 by then President Benigno Aquino III.
