Army veteran used semi-automatic rifle in home invasion, police say

A man has denied breaking into his former partner’s house using his military training and carrying a semi-automatic rifle. George Robert Tweedy, 59, sparked a manhunt across the South Island after allegedly breaking into the woman’s property in Greymouth on May 10. Judge Richard Russell said it was alleged that Tweedy, who formerly served in the British and New Zealand armies, turned up at the woman’s house at about 10.30pm armed with a military-style semi-assault rifle. Tweedy entered the woman’s bedroom, pointed the rifle at her, touching her face, the judge said. Defence counsel Michael Walker argued that Tweedy, who was remanded in custody, be released on electronically monitored bail.
