NewsArmy Chief Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva has denied involvement over an election advertisement, which had used his photograph and a quote, Election Commission (EC) Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya said. Issuing a special statement today (Oct 18), Deshapriya noted that the Army Commander had written to the Defence Secretary clarifying his stance on the advertisement. Lt. Gen. Silva had stated that he understands that, as a “responsible” Army Commander, he understands that he does not have the authority to intervene in political matters. Accordingly, the Army Chief had ensured that he will not act in a manner which will provide an advantage to any presidential candidate. Meanwhile, the political party which had allegedly published the advertisement has also denied any link over the matter, Deshapriya said in his statement.
