Armed militias illegally detaining women in Libyafrom AHMED ZAYED in Tripoli, LibyaTRIPOLI, (CAJ News) – MIGRANT women detained by government or militias and armed groups in Libya are vulnerable to sexual and physical violence as well as forced prostitution. According to the Mixed Migration Monitoring Mechanism (4Mi) of the Danish Refugee Council and Regional Mixed Migration Secretariat, widespread racism and authorities’ responses to migration have put irregular migrant women at risk. Women, according to the humanitarian agencies, are bearing the brunt of the waves of anti-immigrant violence targeting black Africans in Libya. Sub-Saharan migrants in Libya are said to face increased xenophobia compared to other nationals. Fearing harassment, Christian migrants, mainly women reportedly adopt Muslim customs and practice their faith in private.
