Arkansas State Police said they have arrested a suspect accused of fatally shooting a police officer Monday in a small northeastern town after a manhunt that stretched on for hours. Lt. Patrick Weatherford, a 15-year department veteran, was shot in the line of duty during a traffic stop in Newport, about 90 miles northeast of Little Rock. Newport police told local media that a person is in custody, and a press conference is scheduled tentatively for 10:30 a.m. Weatherford was assisting another officer with the traffic stop when he was shot, police said. He studied criminal justice at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock and attended the FBI National Academy, according to his Linkedin profile.
