The research came from Villanova University, Pennsylvania, where Professor Elizabeth B. Dowdell, PhD discovered that more than a quarter of students interviewed for the study reported texting in their sleep. An additional 17.2 per cent reported having answered their phone while asleep. In general the people who texted while dozing reported a lower quality sleep in their self assessment. They were also, and this is no major surprise, much more likely to sleep with their phone next to them than their non-sleep texting friends. The report blames irregular sleep schedules, self-imposed sleep deprivation (from too much fun during night hours) and recreational drug use.
