Imagine a society in which culture has exhausted itself. There are no new films, no new books, no new ways of making music, no new fashions, no new ideas and no new arguments. The clothes they wear are almost identical to the fashions of their parents’ youth 30 or 40 years ago. When they go to the cinema they watch remakes of the films their parents watched when they were young. According to cultural theorists on both the left and right, it’s not hard to imagine this lifeless cultural wasteland.
