Unless we make streets safer, the number of fatalities and serious injuries from road crashes will continue to rise. The risk of serious injury or death from a collision increases when vehicle speeds are faster. There is a global trend among urban planners to create what are called “Complete Streets” — streets that are designed to provide safe access for persons of all abilities, whether pedestrians, cyclists, public transport users or private vehicle users. We urge national and local governments (even private developers) to adopt a “Complete Streets” policy, as many cities all over the world have done (just google “Complete Streets” and find out how it works). Implementation of the policy will vary in each locality but the end objective is to make streets “inclusive” by addressing the needs of all users, not just the requirements of motorists.
