Archaic colonial terms in laws updated

The Bill seeks to replace certain terms in the said laws, which were used in the colonial era and are no longer in use due to their archaic nature, with more apt and modern ones. The Justice Ministry claimed that this is the first time such amendments were made after Sri Lanka gained Independence. According to the Ministry, under the said amendments, “waging war against the Queen” has been replaced with “waging war against the Republic”, while the term “the Queen” has been replaced with “the Republic”. In addition, the term “Lanka” has been changed to “Sri Lanka”; “Sri Lanka Government” to “Sri Lanka’s Government”; “Governor” to “the President”; and “Charter” to “Regulations and Orders”. Furthermore, the terms “civil service”, “police vidane”, “of wife”, and “Senator” have been replaced with “Sri Lanka Administrative Service”, “grama sewa niladhari”, “of spouse”, and “Member of Parliament”, respectively.
