Appellate Division stays HC order over income tax on private universities

The Appellate Division’s chamber judge Justice Mirza Hussain Haider gave the order on Wednesday after hearing a petition by the State. On Monday, the High Court ruled that the two government circulars imposing 15% income tax on private universities, medical and dental colleges, engineering colleges and institutions offering IT education were illegal. The decision by the HC bench of Justice Sheikh Hassan Arif and Justice Bhishmadev Chakrabortty came after hearing 46 petitions filed by several private universities. The court also ordered that the revenue raised through the circulars be reimbursed.
