Antique piano impounded and keys to be buried after ivory row

A British professor and his family who emigrated to New Zealand have had their antique piano impounded and the ivory keys confiscated. Julian Paton, a professor of physiology and expert in heart disease, moved with his wife and children from Bristol to Auckland last November, taking the 120-year-old piano. He was unaware that he needed an export permit under international trade rules designed to protect elephants from poaching. Professor Paton, 56, bought the piano as a gift 30 years ago for his wife, Julia, 50. The instrument was confiscated on arrival in Auckland and has been held at a storage site for eight months while the professor fought to have it returned.
