Anti-riot police stop tea pickers’ demos in Nandi

Scores of people were injured as police fired teargas to stop a demonstration by 12,000 striking tea pickers in Nandi Hills. Workers from Eastern Produce Tea Company went on strike demanding a 30 per cent wage increase over two years as directed by the Labour Court last week. She and area police boss Stavelino Kubai said security would not be compromised in dealing with law breakers. “Some of the striking workers were to break into business premises and stone motorists, hence, the need to break up the demonstration since their union had not even notified us as required by law,” Nandi county commissioner Lucy Mulili said. Police said the protesters intended to loot business premises.
