Anti-graft progress praised

PETALING JAYA: Civil society has praised Malaysia’s marked improvement on Transparency International’s (TI) Corruption Perception Index (CPI) 2019 that went up 10 notches, but also warned against complacency. Centre to Combat Corruption and Cronyism (C4) founder Cynthia Gabriel described the improvement as “a huge leap ahead”. TI-Malaysia’s former president Datuk Seri Akhbar Satar attributed the improvement to Pakatan Harapan’s efforts to combat corruption after coming to power in 2018. “The 2019 CPI score for Malaysia is the best so far in the last 20 years,” he said. In 2018, Malaysia ranked 61 out of 180 countries, scoring 47 out of 100.
