Anthem is attempting to save its proposed acquisition of Cigna Corp after a trial judge in February blocked the combination as anticompetitive. That money would be passed along to employers and consumers in the form of lower health care costs, Anthem lawyer Christopher Curran argued. It won rulings against both deals, the final major accomplishments of the Obama administration antitrust team at the Justice Department. The Justice Department lawyer repeatedly pushed back on any suggestion that the merger might be good for the public. The Justice Department is litigating the Anthem appeal during a period of transition.
