Journalists thrust microphones toward President Obama and President-elect Donald Trump during a meeting at the White House on Thursday. (Jabin Botsford/The Washington Post)More than a dozen media organizations, including the National Press Club and the Society of Professional Journalists, submitted a joint letter to President-elect Donald Trump on Wednesday asking him to "commit to a protective press pool from now until the final day of [his] presidency." On Monday, the White House Correspondents' Association said it is "deeply concerned by President-elect Donald Trump's decision to reject the practice of traveling with a protective pool of reporters for his first visit to Washington." Trump has not heeded any of these calls, even as his spokeswoman has repeatedly sought to reassure reporters that he will allow a protective pool to cover him. Upholding the protective pool precedent depends on having a president who values the role of the press.
