Emmanuel Macron’s victory in the first round of the French presidential election was greeted with relief rather than triumph in Brussels and other European capitals. With just 4 percentage points separating the top four candidates, the nightmare scenario of a final round between the anti-EU far left and far right candidates was averted by only the narrowest of margins.
