Pax Romana came to an end when the Roman Empire crumbled during the a.d. 400s. The eastern leg of the Roman Empire became the Byzantine Empire, headquartered at Constantinople. Soon afterward, the pope crowned Charlemagne “the 73rd emperor of the fourth world empire,” referring to the Holy Roman Empire.
