Annual memorial will honour memory of Wexford’s John Barry – ‘The father of the American Navy’


The Annual Commodore John Barry memorial and wreath laying ceremony will be hosted by the new Mayor or Wexford Borough on Sunday, June 30 at 6 p.m. on the Crescent Quay. The Honour Guard, provided by the Naval Service Reserve Defence Forces, will be led by the St. Patrick’s Fife & Drum Band. A native of Tacumshane, Commodore John Barry served in the Continental Navy during the American Revolutionary War and in the United States Navy during the Quasi-War. He has been described by some as being "The Father of the American Navy". "The statue was donated and erected during General Eisenhower’s term as president and he visited Wexford to honour the Commander.
